The original Sonnet G3 cards were the same size as the NewerTech G3 cards
from which they were copied.

The later Sonnet G4 and G4 cards were dramatically reduced in size, as more
efficient, smaller cooling components became available. Also a higher level of
integration.

The original G3 cards of both manufacturers used the same commercially
available "snap in" cooler.

The later Sonnet cards used a custom made cooler which was riveted to the
board.

The NewerTech and the original Sonnet cards both had the same form factor
(not surprising as they were essentially identical cards), which was a marketing
decision as the reduced form factor was intended to accommodate the Macintosh
clones. A removable metal adapter accommodates the standard form factor or the
clone form factor.

Apple stuck with the "official" IBM form factor for all of its popularly
priced machines.

Apple's ANS series (Apple Network Server), which is a 150 MHz or 200 MHz 604e
server with redundant components, always used a special form factor processor
card, which is about five times the size of a standard card, but is equipped
for extended diagnostics (probably JTAG) during manufacture and also has a
significantly larger cooler.
