I have a "All in One" GS/233 that was given to me. I want to install
OS X on it, but I know it will need a CPU upgrade. Can the CPU in one
of them be swapped for something like a Apple G3/400 zif? The person that gave it to me said he didn't think it would work. Will
it? Would any G3 or G4 zif work in it, or are there specific ones for
the all in ones?
I have a G3-AIO running OS X 10.2.6.
The G3-AIO is more or less identical to the tower & desktop model. The only difference is the "claw" (video pass through connector) on the AIO's personality card (for the AIO's internal monitor).
As for the system only being 233-Mhz, I believe having lots of memory is a more important factor. I suggest at least 256-megs. Be warned, some DIMMs which work under OS 9, fail under OS X. While I was able to install OS X on my AIO, it would lock up during the bootup/registeration. Removing the bad DIMM fixed the problem.
As for swapping CPU's, any Zif designed for the other Beige models, work in the AIO. However, some Beige units were shipped with a faulty "voltage regulator module" (VRM). The VRM in these units work fine with G3 Zifs, but supply the wrong voltage to G4 Zifs. If the VRM is the "Royal" branded model, it must be replaced before installing a G4 Zif.
I believe most (if not all) AIO's had Revision 2 motherboards with "B" ROMs.
The Rev.2 motherboard will give you ATI RagePro graphics, with 2-megs of video memory on the motherboard. You can add another 4-megs of video memory using a SODIMM (same as the 4-meg SODIMM used in the early iMacs.) Although I added the extra memory, I stuck a Radeon7000 PCI card in the back and use it to drive an Applevision 850av monitor as my primary.
The "B" ROM allows "slave" devices on the ATA chains, allowing up to four ATA drives. I pulled the SCSI ZIP drive, replaced it with ATA HD by replacing the cable going from the motherboard to the CD-ROM.
