I had exactly the same experience as Andrew... it turned out that I had an IOGear USB *2.0* card which, while advertised as compatible with USB 1.0 and 1.1 (and OHCI), also required a G3 or better in the host machine.
Naturally, I pulled the card from the 8500 it was in.
Just an experience that not _all_ USB cards work, even with Apple USB Adaptor Card Support 1.4.1.

My first card is an Iogear GIC220U 2.0... but the new one is a generic PC/Mac 1.1, and it isn't working either.
I think this is the first time I heard of a card being totally immune to the reason of Apple.
Make that TWO cards...
I guess I got really very lucky with my $ 20.00 off-the-Walmart-shelf Belkin card aimed at PCers !
