>> If your surge protector is more than 12 months old, has been througha summer of thunderstorms, then it's probably worthless and is only good as a source of extra outlets.
That's simply not true.

Does anyone ever read the Fine print on there Surge Protector that they buy at the Walmart, K-Mart, Dollar store or just about any Computer store. They all say the same thing basicly, if the unit has been through a Spike, or Surge replace it ASAP,
This refers to anomalies that are large enough to trip the surge protector's fuse(s). For each that does that, hundreds of smaller ones will be properly smoothed out by the protector's circuitry. UPS' say/do the same thing, btw. Of course, if the protector uses breakers instead of fuses, they can sometimes be reset.
And if you think about it... Do you really want to use any power conditioning device after it's had its ass kicked by a big spike or surge? That's kindof like continuing to drive on a flat tire...
Never ever hook them up to one another, that's in the Fine print also.
Right. If it works correctly, the surge that trips one will never get to the next.
I daisy chain power-strips. The surge protector is plugged directly into the wall outlet and the root strip is plugged into it. Technically, not a good idea either... but it's ok as long as you're careful to not overload the circuit.
Also, no one has said one thing about External HD cases that have a built in wall-wart with-in inches of the HD, what kind of harm is happening to the HD in those cases, if any.
No harm. Three "defenses": The inverse square law, the shielding around the power supply, and the shielding on the HD mechanism itself.
