I have heard of people using imac OS cds for installing the OS (8.6/9.1, ect.) on non imac machines. Am I dreaming or is this possible?
Early iMacs came with "restore CDs". That is, all the CD would do is restore the tailored system and apps Apple shipped on the computer. Useless. After much customer screaming, Apple switched to providing a full installation kit.
The trick is to get a CD that's newer than your Mac, so it's fully supported.
Or you could buy a real Mac OS kit, so you're legally licensed.
I recently came into possesion of a 7300/G4 350(maxpower) with 200mb ram but since it seems that my original 8.5 cd has some custom icons missing (according to disk first aid), I am looking into the above option. By the way, is there any way to (*ahem* )repair missing custom icons?
Ignore any problem on the CD. After the install is done, a desktop rebuild and Disk First Aid pass should correct most. A utility such as File Buddy will do the rest.
