When do the authentication messages appear? When you contact the server to get your mail? You need to fill out the Tools/Accounts/Account Settings very carefully, getting advice if necessary from your ISP. I use OE 5.02 and have no trouble with lots and lots of "Acccounts", I have only had trouble when I have failed to get the right password in the beginning or wrongly filled out the boxes. As for this business of IE, don't use it if you don't want. I do and keep coming back to it because it works for me without so many downsides, Mozilla is nice but try organising bookmarks in it easily, putting things on the menu bar and so on...
