I don't think you have to erase the HD or go to HFS+ to go to OS9.  I
could be wrong though as I have upgraded to HFS+ long ago.

It has been a while, but my guess Is the installer will give you a choice but the benefits of HFS+ make it worth reformatting..
Why not take advantage of it early ?


I think Steve might worry that even without the HFS + option the installer may overwrite his data.

But just be aware Steve. The OS 9 package will most probably need more space on the Hard drive than the OS 8 system folder. So hopefully you have enough free space if you try to install with your files and data in place.

This is not to say it wont work. I have done it many times. But before I knew what to look for I did have problems.
Don't try it on a disk that is very near full . Clear some space if you need to. The installer will tell you what it needs and how much you have.
