You know, I don't think this, up to this point in time, has been discussed
in depth. This might be a good time to try. All comments are my opinions.
Yours will vary.

All the below are presumed to have PPC-grade processors except the
kids-and-seniors segment:

I have a 7300/180 with a Zip Drive, 224 MB of RAM, and a 2 GIG HD. In my
opinion, even though I cling to my Mac Plusses still, a computer running
at less than 400mhz. is, when it comes to the new, content-rich Internet,
about as slow as one can go on dial-up.

I think a machine running at around 300mhz. and up is widely suitable for
DSL and cable modem connections.

For those not heavily using the Internet, but requiring home-office useage,
a machine as slow as 180mhz. would suffice but may need an upgrade for
certain work.

For kids and seniors not wanting Internet access, I think a machine of
68040/33 speed can be very useable if packed with the right kinds of
softwares.

Emailing is more than do-able. And with enough RAM added, regular
research-based Internetting will work, if one resolves themselves to
lack of access on many web-pages due to the browser's age and the slowness
of the Mac.

I am a proponent of longevity for Old Macs, so I try to make them as useful
as possible as long as possible. Differing social awareness makes it harder
to place old computers into homes. If it can't do all th modern stuff, even
though it comes free or nearly so, people are turning them down preferring
to wait until they can afford their own shiny new box-that-does-it-all.

If it weren't for Mac Freaks like those on these lists, older machines would
have already passed away.

What's a stock 7300 worth? With a monitor, keyboard, mouse and printer:

$50-$65.
