Not quite, everything up to OS 7.1 is freeware and available for download from Apple. AND the computer is entitled to run the system that it shipped with. Personally, I recommend using Conflict Catcher 9's "clean-install system merge" feature to preserve preferences, drivers and registrations when performing a clean install. CC 9 is cheap right now in the wake of Casady and Greene's demise <sniff>. Froogle the web. Graphic Converter is a cheap and viable and shareware alternative to Photoshop--which most people don't need anyway. Or you can pick up a older copy of Photoshop on eBay, just request that the seller provide a signed Adobe license transfer. A new copy of Photoshop Elements is also pretty inexpensive, and unless you're a designer, again you won't need more than that to crop and clean up your pictures. Ditto eBay for Office or Appleworks 6 is available cheap and it's pretty compatible. Check out our own LEM Swap List, where you can also post requests for used software. Lost installation disks for registered software can sometimes be replaced for very little. Contact the manufacturer. Another cheap source of legal software is relatives and friends who have unwisely purchased stuff that's too much for them. Ask around. I've received some very expensive packages, complete with license transfers from clients, friends and relatives who come to realize that--for example--they'll never learn Quark and they're glad to get something back on their investment. Cleaning up a software collection is work, but it can be done and it doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg. Cheryl -- PCI-PowerMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
