I burnt a TDK blank successfully after (1) cleaning with a CD cleaner, (2) reinstalling Toast from original disk (3) turning off Appletalk, (4) reinstalling just the System file and (5) talking a lot to you guys...
I suspect it was the cleaning (so thanks especially Dan, and in particular regarding the error messages which suggested it as a clue to him). I know, it would have been more responsible if I isolated one factor at a time... sorry, just did not want to make more coasters.
