Your System software should treat that G3 CPU as an Apple-compatible while installing.
You can add in support for special CPU functions like cache support and adjustment
of speeds, if applicable, after the install.
I try to place a fresh install on a separate hard drive for experimentals, to prevent the
loss of important data on the original hard disk.
