I'm trying to install the freebie 7.5.3 from Apple's website on my Starmax 4000/200, which, as I understand is internally a PowerMac 4400 in a tower. I'm ultimately trying to install Linux on this box, but, like all OldWorld Macs, the boot loader requires a working piece of system software. Unfortunately, I don't have the hard drive space to spare for OS 9.1, so I'm trying this older OS. When I boot from my external SCSI drive with 9.1 and format the internal hard drive with the old HFS, all is fine. However, I get an error message when I launch the 7.5.3 installer. It says that the installer script doesn't recognize this Macintosh. On the Starmax list, no one had any ideas aside from trying OS 7.6. Any ideas on getting 7.5.3 to install or should I go for 7.6? Also, does another Mac OS use less hard drive space? That's my primary concern, since I need as much room as I can spare for Linux. Thanks all
Anthony
Life is too short to use a half-baked OS like Windows.
