Subject: [PCI] Basic Question
Date: Tue, 1 Mar 2005 11:09:19 -0800
In terms of wear and tear, is it better to leave my 8600 on, in sleep
mode, when not in use or turn it off? The machine is not connected to
the internet or network so security is not an issue.

If I am going to be away for more than a couple of hours and *not sure* I
will come back to computer, I turn machine off. Otherwise I leave it on but
see that screen is low or sleeping or screen-saved. I do not have my HDs run
down on sleep normally because firing up the drives is where the most wear
and tear occurs...(see options in energy control panel). Clear as mud? Why
not just leave all on all the time? Ah, because then we are talking wear and
tear again because of sheer amount of time, not to mention energy waste...
What would Solomon do? There is no known definitive answer. If you do one
thing, you wear out the power unit, if another the HDs, if another your
pocket, and so on.

One of our listers sig file used to say something about use it up wear it out.
An old HD or PSU is less cost than the payment per month on a new machine.
maybe not as nice as a new machine though.
