I tried lot of other MP3 decoders: MacAmp, Audion, Onadime Player, QDesign MVP, Audacity, etc..., but for me, Soundjam has been the best program for listening MP3's on an old powermac 7500 (Mac OS 9.2).
try SoundApp and try the playlist shuffle function - it chooses so mysteriously well among the mp3s if you do not allow it to much memory it chooses better !
