Hi Guys,

I'm currently running a 9600/350 (native daughterboard) and have a shot at
getting a 500MHz upgrade for $50 or so.

That's a decent deal as far as it goes, but I'd be reluctant to drop any money into a PCI mac at this point in time.

Before I "take the plunge," though, I wanted to see if anyone else on the
board knew of any sweet deals for faster upgrades. If I had my druthers, of
course, I'd rather a 700-800MHz upgrade (or faster).

The cost-benefit ratio is definitely nagging me as I fret over this. _

What do you guys see 500 MHz or faster upgrades go for these days? Has the
Mac Mini caused pricing on PPC upgrades to drop yet?

No, because the price of these upgrades is not elastic. It *has* kicked the legs out from under the used Mac market, though.

 Is there, perhaps, a
"cost per MHz" scale to use when pricing these things out?

The dilemma here is:

Do I _really_ want to pour more money into my 9600 box? Beloved though it
is, I'm mindful that any upgrade I get is going to get choked by the
wretched 50MHz bus speed.

or

Am I just flogging a dead horse here and should just go for a Mini (Mark
II)?

Trust me. You'll always have a soft spot for that greasy spot where the dead horse used to be, but a Mini will *SO* blow it away performance-wise it's not even a contest.

At this point, dropping $5, let alone $50 into a 9600 is an issue of love and/or obsession; from a computing or economics standpoint it makes zero sense.

If you need PCI slots, move to a G4 tower of some sort. If not, get a Mini.
