I trust you have advised your friend to back up data.

If all the IDs are distinct and the termination is right and the total power
consumption is not excessive (you need to get all the specs of the
individual units and add them up and see that they are well within the range
of the PSU. 3HDs and a CD and anything else running? Should be ok though
maybe you have to add.) then you better open up and listen to see which is
the noisy drive. Yank it out. you are probably right about a dying disk.

Must say, I have seen a 1.2MHz G4 with not much less ram than this machine
and it was not so good. Surely double the RAM and more to run X. On this
subject, better do a Ram check on what your friend has.
