David,
If it's anything like my A6 sized Wacom GD-0405-A, it may also work without a control panel, but would behave like a basic mouse. Mine's connected to the keyboard mouse socket (on a 5500) using a splitter supplied with the tablet. The panel adds and modifies the drawing capabilities. The latest extension I have is extractable as the folder, "Wacom Intuos Mac_478_2_EN', containing the version 4.7.8 B-2 Wacom Tablet control panel and a read-me.

A big UD-1218-R wacom tablet has fallen into my lap. Anyone run such a thing
on a legacy mac (7600 eg.). The lead looks like it plugs into a mouse adb
port and there is another bit off it that might be power. Not sure I have
any power brick for it? What would it need? Excuse my ignorance on this, I
have never seen one but would like to see it working before giving or
selling it to someone...
