You can add a SCSI drive for a lot cheaper than getting an ATA card & drive.

Surplus Computers has 9 to 50 GB SCSI drives for comparable to ATA drives.
They have SCA, which stands for Self Contained Adapter, meaning communication,
power are integrated into the same connector. You can get an adapter to that
to you 50-pin, for $10.

You'll need a "sled" for about $10, also, and screws of course(I don't recall
the thread size at the moment).

Then you set a jumper for SCSI ID 1, since you current internal drive is
already ID 0. If you are using an SCA drive, you would do this on the adapter
before you connect it to the drive. Drive mounts on sled with screws, sled
then slides back into the open bay. Connect power to the power socket, connect
the SCSI ribbon cable to its socket on the drive.

When you boot the machine, use Drive Setup to format the drive, and voila!

I have the very same model, purchased around the same time, but my has OS X
10.2.8 on it, stock 604, 9 and 50 GB drives, 512 MB RAM.
