Well, as it has turned out the drive has died again. I am very glad I
didn't trust it and I managed to get all the important data off. That
was the biggest relief.
I ran fine for a short while and then it started occuring errors again
and was unable to read and then stared clanking.
So, now I need to get it out of the chain. Since these are ata drives
and ofcourse the drive that died was the master, I switched the jumpers
over so that the new drive was the master and disconnected the other one
entirely.
However on boot, first I get a flashing question mark over a file
folder, then a mac symbol over a folder, then a cursor, then a blank
screen for a few minutes and then it starts with the Mac OS.
What all do I need to do? push the cuda? trash the finder prefs? zap the
pram? anything else?
Thanks for everyone help. I truly appreciate it....

Many thanks,
Pam
