If you're thinking of using Jaz or Zip cartridges as archival storage,

For archival purposes(3 or more years or absolutely critical data)
magneto-optical is pretty much the best consumer-accessible solution
available. It's not particularily cheap though, but again, you get what
you pay for. It's a mature technology that is still supported and will
likely be for the foreseeable future. And the cartridges can handle
considerable abuse.

Zip never made very good sense from an economic point of view either if one needed more than a few disks. I think it became so popular because the cost of the drive was cheap.

The media is a 100 MB disk which cost $10 - $15 when released and still costs $5 - $10 I think.

A 640 MB Magneto Optical drive uses media with a 600 MB capacity and cost about $15. So for the cost of a Zip disk at release, one could get a disk with six times the capacity which is actually reliable and usable as archival storage.

The problem is that ZIP drives cost $120 back then and 640MB MO drives cost about $250.

Still, you'd have to be well off to use either for archiving. You can make many tape backup copies for the cost of MO archiving. My luck with DAT tape has been excellent, but that's just me.
