>>Listers,
I just saw a great deal on SanDisk Cruzer Mini USM Flash Drives (memory
sticks) so I bought a 1 GB stick. The box says it is compatible with USB 1.1
and 2.
I have USB 1 via a PCI card, and use it to connect my Palm. So, it works.
However, when I put in the stick, my machine immediately died. Powered down.
I rebooted, twice, before things returned to normal. However, I don't see
the stick on my desktop. I've done this before with borrowed sticks, and
have seen them just fine.
I'm running OS 9.1 on a 7500/G3.
Any idea what is going on? Would the 1 GB capacity have anything to do with
it?

How are you plugging the USB stick into the machine? If you are
using a hub, the would be no electrical reason for the computer to
simply shut down.
I'm plugging it in directly into the receptacle in the card. I don't have a
hub.
The only thing that comes to mind is that there is some type of short
in the stick itself. The USB socket supplies 5V which is suppose to
be current limited. As a test I'd suggest plugging the stick into
some other computer's USB socket (one you can do without, just in
case) and see what happens. Other than that, if you plugged it in
at some awkward angle, it might have shorted the 5V line to ground.
