David Elmo <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> chimes in with...

Does the model # end with LC or LW? IIRC, the LC model is an Ultra2
LVD drive with 68 pin connector and is available in true low-profile
(1") form factor. I'm currently using a LW model, which is a
half-height (1.6") SCA drive with 80 pin connector, in a B&W (via
80-to-68 pin adapter connected to Ultra2 SCSI controller card). The
Cheetah is a 10K drive with max data transfer rate of 80 MB/sec, so I'd
use it with at least an UltraWide controller (such as ATTO ExpressPCI
PSC, 40 MB/sec) for best results. And use a terminated drive cable.

If may chip in here... I have an LC and tried it with both an
ATTO and a Adaptec U2B card and fancy terminated cable. 10,000
rpm and certainly not low profile (tall as a house). Got it
running but there would be freezes... It is on my kitchen table
right now and I love looking at it. The adaptor that i got for
it came with no instruction about the pins, I can see how to id
them but it is a bit obscure about whether it is working in LVD
or in SE mode? I will give it a go soon when I have time and see
what is what. Anyone want to say anything about these I am all
ears...

Ooh, tall as a house? Never seen a full-height LC -- must be something to behold! The half-height LW I currently have installed in a B&W is running on an Adaptec 2940U2B, via heavy duty Vantec U160 rated cable I got from Surplus Computers: http://www.surpluscomputers.com/store/main.aspx? p=ItemDetail&item=CBL10109. No affiliation, just saying what particulars work for me.

I suppose I should thank my lucky stars that the SCSI Voodoo Gods have smiled on me. No termination/ID probs at all with this gear -- truly plug and play. This particular Vantec cable is only two-device, but I've run two drives at once also with no probs/issues. Which Mac are you having probs with here, David -- your 73/7600 (can't remember which you've posted about)...? Could be a firmware issue; not all the UltraSCSI cards I've tried play nice with "G2" Power Macs.

You'll prolly need to use some special SCSI management app to ascertain in which mode the drives are running; ATTO's Express Pro-Tools (free d/l from their site), Adaptecs PowerDomain, or some such. I never mess with drive jumpers to try to set those options; only jumpers I ever touch on those SCA adapters are Drive ID's. Also, AFAIK the Adaptec PowerDomain cards' "Speed Flex" feature allows LVD and SE drives to co-exist on the same bus without dropping LVD's down to SE transfer rates...as long as SE's are at the end of the chain.
