How did you get the computer to use that card instead of the onboard NIC?

I have the same situation I suspect. and have that same Dlink card but
dunno howto make the computer use it.

On the control panel for TCP/IP or AppleTalk you'll see a drop-down box that will allow you to select LocalTalk, Onboard Ethernet or an ethernet card (assuming you have the card's extension(s) installed), identified as Ethernet Slot (slot number). At least that's how it works on my 9600/200 with a RealTek card.
