Is that legal?

Hi Matt,
I think the legality of making copies has been discussed in =depth=
around here.
By the implication of your answer, you seem to imply that it is not
legal to make backup copies.
I am not a lawyer, but I did play one in a high school play and the
following is only applicable in the US.
It is perfectly legal to make a backup copy of something you own for
your own use as long as you do not circumvent any electronic copy
protection that the seller has placed on the CD or DVD according
according to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.
It is COMPLETELY legal to make a backup copy for your own use of your
Tiger DVD. It is also acceptable to make a backup copy FOR YOUR OWN USE
of any applications that you own that need a serial number, usb dongle
or any other after install copy protection scheme.
It is NOT legal, at this time, to make a backup of anything that has a
copy protection scheme encoded onto the disk itself. Almost all
commercial DVDs use the CSS (Content Scrambling System, iirc) to
prevent copies. Therefore, it is illegal to use a tool like DeCSS to
make a backup copy of the Barbie Princess and the Pauper DVD that I
have played over 100 times incase it gets scratched and unplayable. In
addition, most manufactures will not replace a scratched DVD, even
though I am the original purchaser who paid full retail for it. If it
gets scratched, tough luck, buy a new copy.
Just my morning rant.
