I think about this issue for more than one week. Finally my solution to this is to use a drop down menu because I'll have more than two modes for the side pane in the future. A on/off switch is apparently not enough. That's why it's changed to a drop down menu. Today I put it into view menu and later there will be an option to hide the drop down menu from side pane but I'm still thinking about where to put the option. An option to hide the whole side pane will be availble, too. I, however, discovered some weird bugs in the tab-rework branch. Maybe the way to overcome limitations of GtkNotebook bings more problem than benefit. I want to rewrite this part again now. :-( GtkNotebook forces using differet Widgets for every page. So it's not possible to share the same side pane and other widgets inside the notebook among the pages. This requires creating many different widgets/windows, which is not necessarily needed. My current dirty hack is to remove the side pane before switching to another page, and added it to the newly active page. This approach saves memory and X11 resources, but creates maintaince headache. It's a hard choice. Maybe I'll revert this and use the old way used in 0.5 series, using different widgets for different notebook pages. Though more resources will be needed, it works more correctly.
