One point I wanted to add to the bug report is that PCRE as distributed with both recent versions of Apache's HTTPD was able to compile using the same IBM C compiler. The versions of PCRE included in HTTPD 2.0.63 and 2.2.11 are 3.0 and 5.0 respectively while the version of PCRE included in PHP 5.2.8 is 7.8.
