The problem is that the user needs to rebuild the library. Most people can't do that. We use stock Debian and receive regular security updates. It's not practical to basically fork PHP. If the speed penalty is under 20% you might consider recommending the PHP guys to use the heap instead of stack. I understand this is not a bug in PCRE per se, neither in PHP.
