I'm sure you realized that utf8.c is just a bit of hackery for testing. I don't think I had ever compiled it with warnings enabled. However, since you raised the issue, and as I have some time on my hands, I have compiled it with lots of warnings, which found your issues and a few more. I've fixed those, but also, while I was at it, I upgraded the program with a few more features. It now warns for illegal Unicode characters. At the same time, I've done something similar to the ucptest program, adding some features and additional tests.
