To one and all,

This problem is occurring on a friend's system - Dell computer, Win98SE,
128Meg ram, and all that comes with fairly new Dell systems.

It came with a DVD drive and and the corresponding software with the
system. The last time he played any DVDs, about a month ago, he was able
to play them without any problem. However, over the last month, he has
installed various updates to the system from MS, as well as some other
software packages. Yesterday, he went to play a DVD, and the program
started up as normal - BUT after a few seconds, it comes up with a
warning box that "some application is preventing the playing of DVDs".
VERY informative - NOT!!!!

After he told me of this, I was over to his house last night, looked at
the system, and I am totally stumped. He called Dell tech support, after
we originally talked, and they had him uninstall the DVD software, and
re-installed with no change in the problem. He was told to run msconfig,
which would have been my next try, and nothing is making any difference
it would seem in what is getting loaded. I tried going into msconfig to
see what is getting loaded at startup, tried doing cntrl-alt-del to see
what is actually loaded, and looked at system information, to see IRQs,
DMAs, and other info, and got NOWHERE fast.

I know the problem could be related to audio and/or video, but WHERE
exactly is what I can not figure out how to isolate at this point. Not
sure at this point if to another app, or to some update problem from the
Windows updates he installed on his system.

Unfortunately, he did not get a CD burner with the system when he
originally ordered - so he does not have a system backup unfortunately
to restore to a previous working system configuration.

Another friend had similar issues recently, similar - changed some
hardware and the DVD software that came with his ATI video card would
not work. Changed the DVD drive, removed the ATI DVD software, and
installed the DVD software that came with the new drive, and absolutely
NO problem.

So not sure what the original friend should do at this point to try to
solve the problem - try to continue to find which issue is causing the
DVD software to not work, or try to get a different program, and see
what that does on the system??? I am not sure what kind of approach to
do at this point.
