To one and all,
A friend of mine has a Dell computer, running Win98SE, which he obtained
directly from Dell about a year ago, and up to 2 weeks ago, was working
fine. HOWEVER, all of a sudden, all networking operations on his system,
both with regard to dial-up modem as well as cable modem, ended up going
to a crawl.
Last night I got to take a look at his system, and as he had found, when
you looked in internet options, with regard to temporary internet files,
there was nothing listed for a directory/folder for the files. And
nothing that we could try would let you put a directory for this item.
Took a look at the settings for all the network listed items, such as
TCP/IP and the others, both for dial-up as well as cable, and everything
looks totally ok.
I have no idea if the other problem he has on his system is at all
related to this issue, but some weeks ago, his DVD software stopped
working on his system as well. Even after uninstalling the software, and
re-installing it, the DVD software will not play any DVD's on his
system.
Luckily he has support from Dell available, but they will be unable to
send someone out to his home for a number of weeks.
Unfortunately, neither issue is one I have had any background or
experience in dealing with previously, so I am not really knowledgable
of where to start going to try and fix the problems, especially if it
involves settings in the registry or similar system files. I was
thinking of running SFC but I know a couple of files that SFC commonly
shows as being an issue are not an issue at all, and can not remember
which files this involves.
So does anyone have any ideas where to look to solve either or both
issues that exist on his system???
