Win98SE, IE5.5 - I decided it was time to download all the critical Windows
updates (never having done it before), but after nearly three hours without
success I'm tearing my hair out and appealing for help.

I followed all the instructions on the normal MS update site, and the
download appeared to start OK (7+MB, 1 hour 27 minutes download time), but
repeatedly stopped after a few minutes with the message that updates could
not be installed. A couple of times my machine actually crashed and had to be
rebooted. No other programs were open or apps working at the time. No luck
there.

Then I went to the MS corporate update site and marked all the critical
security updates I wanted. I specified a download directory on my HD.
Again download seemed to start OK with various filenames coming up on the
status monitor, but every so often a dialog came up saying file was not
signed or could not be found. Then Download History showed every download
status as "failed". I tried again, and this time some downloads showed
"failed" and others showed "trust error". When I searched the
directory I had specified for the updates download, there were folders for
each individual update, but these contained ONLY one small .htm file
specifying the particular update. No .exe files at all.

Of course I retried many times, but with the same negative result. I looked
in the on-line Help file and made sure all the Activex and Security settings
were as specified, even disabled Zone Alarm, deleted the history log as
suggested, closed down IE, even rebooted - still no luck.

I even tried downloading a single small update instead of a whole lot, again
failure!

I've survived so far without any Windows updates, but having finally made
the effort to update my Windows security etc. I'm really frustrated by so
much failure and wasted time.

Does anybody have any further suggestions? Or has anyone experienced similar
problems?

Thanks for your input.
