hi....here is what i learned since my original posting yesterday >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> ....with regard to disabling(at least i call it that) the firewall in the dlink 704P here is what i've done....go to the web configuration page and log in....on the next page click "advanced" on the bottom....on the next page click "misc items".....on the next page you create a DMZ host by filling in the last segment of your ip address in the box as such "192.168.0.xxx" and then checking the "enable" box.....you then click the "save' button on the left.....when you click the "save" button another button named "reboot" appears and you'll also see "Saved! Items marked with (triangle) don't take effective until rebooting!" ....click the "reboot" button....this DOES NOT reboot your computer so i can only assume that it "reboots" the router or "saves" the new configuration....i assure you that you can do all this in a matter of seconds......now to restore the firewall all you do is reverse what you've done.....go back to the last page....remove the ip numbers you inserted....uncheck the "enable" box....click "save" then "reboot"....voila !!!....i'm using Win XP and here's how i get the last segment of my IP....go to network connections and right click the "local area connection" and select "status" and click the "support" tab.....i think your ip should read something like 192.168.0.x x x.....if you use win98 i think you can go start\run and type in winipcfg....... i always use the "test my shields" and "probe my ports" at www.grc.com to test a firewall as i understand it is a reliable place for this test.....when i test the dlink with the firewall enabled it seems to be doing its job with regard to "incoming" traffic but i don't know if it blocks any "outgoing" traffic......now when i change the dlink config as above then my computer seems to be wide open as if it didnt have a firewall at all.....here is what it says when you click the "help" button before you click that "reboot" button>>>> IP Address of DMZ Host DMZ (DeMilitarized Zone) Host is a host without the protection of firewall. It allows a computer to be exposed to unrestricted 2-way communication for Internet games, Video conferencing, Internet telephony and other special applications. NOTE: This feature should be used only when needed. >>>>>>>>> now as to why i wanted to disable the firewall in the first place....my brother-in-law and i often voice chat and transfer files back and forth....after installing the dlink i found that programs like MsMessenger and ICQ didnt allow me to do what i'd done before so i thought disabling the dlink firewall would be easier than trying to change the config of 3-4 other programs so they would work with the dlink.....i also found in my situation that if i "disabled" the dlink firewall this way on my "master" computer that it also disabled it on the other two puters i have networked and if i disabled it on one of the other puters it also disabled it on my "master" computer so you'll have to be careful of this.....what i like about all this is the fact that you can enable and disable the firewall so as to do your thing and it can be done "almost" as quickly as doing the same thing with a software firewall.......i hope this "long" explanation can help others who may have been wondering what to do with a dlink router they may be using.....take care....Gary Burke. ============= PCWorks Mailing List ================= Don't see your post?
