Many thanks to all who replied to me message below. Clint, Karl, Linda, Helene and Ralph
We sure learned a lot about restoring files. A special thanks to Ralph for pointing out the limitations of the sulfnbk.exe file. But everyone missed my point. I did not find the file sulfnbk.exe on my win98 installation disc.........If you did, where was it on your installation disc? In truth I am running win95 on my machine and do no have the SFC file. I borrowed my son's win98 installation disc and here is how I searched for it. First, If the file EXTRACT.EXE is not in your C:\windows\Command folder, copy it to there from your installation disc from the win98 folder. Now go to the desktop and select MSDOS Prompt. Then enter the following: Please observe spaces.. extract.exe /a /d X:\win98\base4.cab > c:\cab98all.txt replace X with drive letter of the drive containing the installation disc.. If base4.cab is not the first CAB file in the win98 folder, then replace it with the name of the first cab file. The /a will extract all CAB files in order from the one specified, so to get all the files the one specified must be the first one in the folder. The /d extracts a directory of the files not the files themselves. The > puts all the directories in the file cab98all.txt which it creates on the c:\ drive. Then hit enter. (my file was 319397 bytes) You can now examine the c:\cab98all.txt file to see what files are on the installation disc in the CAB files. Note: This ignores the CAB files in the c:\Add-ons\PWS folder, but these can be extracted the same as above. Hope this makes sense.
