Jeff, it is better to do HTML editing with notepad because word pad will 
insert extra information into the pages for it's document format. You 
cannot enter markup in Word, you can convert a word document to HTML but it 
inserts a lot of junk you don't want in your code, mainly MS XML. I have 
seen some Word documents balloon up to over 1mb in size when converted to 
HTML. If you want notepad to be more flexible and robust then I suggest you 
use MetaPad which can replace notepad entirely which I do on my 98 system.

Another text editor which is quite robust but is larger than MetaPad is 
NoteTab Lite which is quite popular for some other developers I know. It
