Use of the .htaccess file along with it's accompanying files: .htpasswd and .htgroup can be done along as you have the proper protocols enabled and most importantly than anything else, you must be running Apache or an Apache clone. Internet Information Server (IIS) does not support .htaccess files and so you must use ISAPI which can be a nightmare best left to the IIS help sites.
