Subject: PCWorks: IDE controller problems

I have just upgraded my mainboard to a MSI-6561 with SiS 745 Chipset,
1.4GHz AMD Athlon CPU, and attached my existing hard drives complete with
OS (Win98SE) and all data and applications. The BIOS recognizes both HDs,
complete with their sizes etc. but Windows no longer recognizes the
Secondary IDE Controller, so I can't access any of the partitions on my
second HD
snip
Any suggestions gratefully received. Many thanks.

A reading at this site shows a utility called SiS5571 for windows 98
(http://www.sis.com/support/driver/utility.htm) which is referred to on
the
FAQ page (http://www.sis.com/support/faq/mbfaq.htm) under the heading "8.

How to install Microsoft Windows98 System on your 5571 based mainboard?"

Maybe this is the problem?

Virginia, while you're at this upgrade task, you might consider removing
multiple and no longer extant instances of hardware devices from Device
Manager. In Windows98, you must do this in Safe Mode to see the normally
hidden devices. This will include removing the old IDE Controller Parent
device. Although, you will not be able to remove the actual Primary and
Secondary controllers, I suppose its possible this could be causing a
conflict. With upgrades that include a new motherboard, with the first
power on, I start up in Safe Mode and (usually) remove all devices
possible from Device Manager.

Other possibilities: completely reseat your IDE cable connections, run
the Add New Hardware wizard.
