Well...I don't really like the Preview Pane cuz it is an open door for
dangerous scripts which could be included inside an email...remember that
viewing mail in the Preview Pane is the same as opening it, so the script
WILL be launched

If you can't get the preview pane to stay turned off, I would suggest you
modify your "View". Open one of your folders, or your Inbox and go to the
View menu...click on Current View, then Define Views....in there, click on
the "New" button to create a new view and name it something like
MyView....then make all the settings you want, including clicking on the
"Other" button which is where you can turn off the Preview Pane....then,
once you save this new view, go into each folder and click on the View menu
and choose Current View, then MyView (or whatever you called it) and apply
this view to each folder.

Now the preview pane should definitely stay turned off.

Good luck.

Subject: PCWorks: PreviewPane won't stay unchecked in Outlook 2000

The Preview Pane keeps re-asserting itself. Is this cause for worry?

TIA
