Well, like my post on the LACK of features new versions of
Norton AV have compared to 5.xx; XP is no different. I guess
I'm of 'limited intellect' that I fail to be able to comprehend
the bonehead act of GOING BACKWARDS. Score another
for M$ bashers.

After the default installation, NO links at all could be
clicked in emails from OE! Total OE lock up & crash. Updates
fixed this, but it's rather unsettling to know this existed.
Did this occur with anyone else? (I have NEVER EVER seen
so many updates required for ANY OS before! XP has more
critical updates/patches, etc. after only a few months, than
95, 98, ME have COMBINED, even to this date!!). This makes
you wonder what the "person was on" that developed XP (as do
these things below), and what horrifying things lay ahead.

I was floored when I saw still no Java support. Incredible.
I was forced to use that garbage from Sun (which does not
accurately show applets the way they should be), and it still
is no match for the M$ VM (Virtual Machine). SP1a for XP has
no Java! (Yes I know about the legal issue). I looked for
hours trying to find SP1, and all links that pointed to XP SP1
were bad. I finally found one, and I fully recommend removing
SP1a and installing SP1. It has the REAL Java support.
According to MS, the only difference between these is Java. I
don't have the link on this HD, so if anyone wants it I'll have
to get it off the XP HD.

"View as webpage" under the "view" menu. Another one these
"geniuses" felt "we no longer needed"! I was "slapped" to see
this removed since this is something I MUST have, and see that
I was not alone in my feelings on this matter. I found a fix
for this after about two days of searching, one that WORKED
that is. Not only does it give you back the option of the left
preview pane, but gives you MUCH more, much better than what
98/ME has. http://www.home.acenet.net.au/carwi/webview.asp
Note that you're going to have to copy and folder.htt file from
a 98/ME HD, something they failed to mention (since there is no
folder.htt on XP, at least not on mine). You also have to put
the full path of the folder.htt file in the desktop.ini file.

Ok, so I'm 2 for 2 at getting these problems fixed. :-)

Probably the most bonehead move of all, is not being able to
change your monitor resolution without having to click a dozen
times!! What idiots. (My next OS is going to be LINUX!!) No
"quick res taskbar display controls". Since I'm not on the XP
HD now, I can't check to see if XP has a rundll/deskcp16.dll
that can be loaded in the startup group, but I'm sure it
probably does not. So, I found this program that adds the
control back to the system tray where it should be.
http://www.stintercorp.com/genx/res.php Unfortunately, it
consumes GOBS of resources (SIX %), so if anyone knows of a
better way, please let me know. Having the rundll quickres
program on 98/ME in the system tray didn't consume anything.

Make that now....2.5 out of 3. It's a fix, but unacceptable
with what it consumes.

Now for what I haven't been able to find......does anyone know
how to get rid of that annoying "log off administrator" in the
start menu? TweakUI (here we go again) for XP leaves that
removal option out!

How can you run Scandisk in XP?

A couple of problems I'm having; what do you use for a spell
checker for OE in XP? I was using MS Works 4.5 in 98 & ME
(which adds the spell checker for OE), and it DID install FINE
on XP, no complaints, nor did the XP compatibility test mention
it. However, it does not work. Clicking the "spelling" icon
on an email gives an error "error has occurred", and just
sending an email and letting it check automatically has a
window popping up saying; "The spelling check on this document
was halted, do you want to continue?"

Another is right after the desktop loads, NOTHING in the
quicklaunch toolbar or address bar in that area can be clicked.
Anything on the DESKTOP CAN be clicked as usual. Bringing the
mouse cursor over these areas on the bottom toolbar present me
with the "rotating hourglass" indicative of something running
that should not be running. After a minute or so, it's ok.

Finally, are there any XP Pro updates that should be AVOIDED?
