Rocky you don't mention if you've tried the obvious things.
This could be drivers, software running in the BG, or hardware
incompatibility. When did this start? If it has just started
doing it, then it's more than likely software or driver
related.

Have you removed the drivers and reinstalled them, and tried
the most recent drivers? Did this start after you possibly
installed some new software, drivers, or new hardware? What
are you doing when this happens; the same thing every time
(are there any commonalties when the problem occurs), or will
it happen when apparently nothing is going on?

There are several things to try. Is this integrated sound or
a sound card, what is the model of each, and chipset of the
motherboard?

I have asked all over the place and can't get an idea. What
would
make the sound just stop working and then later start working
on
it's own. Sometimes a reboot would do it and sometimes not.
The
speaker icon does not show in the systray when this happens.
Sometimes after a couple reboots it will show up in the
systray and
the sound will be working. This is 98se.
Any ideas out there.
