That was the very first thing I did when I got XP installed;
disable automatic updates!

Thanks Peter, I missed that area the first time I used TweakUI.
Great thing to check those boxes!  I thought by enabling classic
search in the search area itself would do it, but evidently it
does not.  The Tweakui method worked fine.
