While checking the archives for posted messages, I happen to
come across this one below that I never received, obviously due
to something in their header being blocked by my filters. The
post is pasted below my reply.

(Azhodge, I won't be able to see any of your replies, if any).
XP's restore only retains the information for a few days or so.
If it went back to square one, then you must have done this
recently.

First, you don't want SP1a, you want SP1. The only thing you
can get from MS now, is SP1a. So, you'll just have to search
the web for SP1. I saved it to a disk, but no longer have the
link. It's about 130mb in size. I THINK I sent the link to
Jeff (Dougherty), so he may still have it. I did a lot of
research on this some time back and found out from others (and
also personally) that SP1a is very buggy and SP1 is favorable
over it. Whatever NECESSARY patches/updates SP1 MIGHT need,
you can get from the update site. I cannot emphasize enough to
ONLY INSTALL what you DEFINITELY NEED! If you search the
archives for this topic you'll find several posts on it by me
that go into detail. But in short, just because MS displays
these so called "needed" updates does NOT mean you need them!
You must click the "read more" links on EACH one and read about
them, and you'll find out that in most cases you do not need
them. The update site used to be great, but maybe a year or so
ago, they started putting there all sorts of not only
unnecessary garbage, but garbage that can also screw up a PC
bad and render it almost useless. The fewer updates you must
install, the better.

I got the same error you describe: "Setup could not verify in
the integrity of the file Update.inf". Paste that into Google
and you'll find all sorts of hits on it.

Have a Windows XP that a restore was done and it has taken the
computer back to square one.

Has anyone had the problem of reupdating the Windows Updates.
I have been trying to
put the SP-1 back in and have done extensive search and read
the troubleshooting page
suggestions. I have read that now they have a SP1a out. I
would like to be able to update
and get all the 42 patches installed.

I have tried the SP-1 Express shown on the Windows Update page
and it download but
on the install I get this error which prevents all the items
listed from installing.

1) Software Installation:
The software you are installing has not passed the Windows
Logo testing
to verify its
compability with Windows XP. This software will not
install - Contact
your system Admistrator.

(Now I understand what this is all about when you download from
another site
that has not been
approved by Microsoft - but this is coming from the Windows
Update
Microsoft site).

2) Service Pak 1 Setup Error
Setup could not verify in the integrity of the file
Update.inf. Make
sure the Cryptographic
service is running on this computer.

I have checked the troubleshooting mentioned and this is
running on the
computer (2).
See http://tinyurl.com/2zqa - Problem Downloading/Installing
software
(non-driver item). Click
on 4th item to see the things to check out for this problem
which I have
done.

I have written to the Microsoft support but you know how these
things go
there - anyone run into
this and was able to solve the problem? I understand that a
Windows XP with
the SP1 can be
bought but I really don't want to reformat and lose all the
software that
did come with the computer.

This is on hubby's computer - TIA - Azhodge
