I know people who have had problems installing drivers from the Microsoft site. Right now Microsoft wants to install the wrong drivers for my sound card and Nvidia drivers that are older than the ones currently installed on my computer. If it worked for you then don't worry about it. Depending on your hardware it may always work for you. I prefer to get my video drivers from Nvidia. Also, many times the drivers at Microsoft are older than the drivers being provided by the equipment manufacturers because they have to go through the WHQL certification at Microsoft.
I'm just really careful about anything Microsoft or anyone else wants to install on my computer and I usually research the particular drivers before installing just to see what glitches I may run into.
