The only way I know how: right click the drive and go to 'properties', then 'tools' then scandisk (or from computer management, same thing). It won't run in Windows regardless if the boxes are unchecked. It has to be set to run at the next bootup and on that blue screen when it's running at the next boot, gives absolutely no indication of what's going on; no results, nothing about errors, nothing about being OK. Now when it completes I've never been at the PC because it takes about 2+ hours to run and there is no way anyone can stare at a screen for over 2 hours. I have managed to "luckily" catch it when it completed, and any info didn't stay on the screen for more than a tenth of a second. All I ever recalled seeing was "COMPLETED". Nothing about status. -Clint

I never run scandisk or error checking as it's called in WinXP unless the system asks me to at boot. NTFS doesn't seem to have the file system problems that FAT systems do. In fact it's hard to get it to need a scan. Shutting the system off with the power switch will only infrequently do it. How are you running scandisk? There is a report on the screen when it completes. Ben Moore -----Original Message----- OrpheusComputing.com I don't have a pagefile on my C: partition, it's on a dedicated partition and I have no problem defrag'ing that! So maybe it's the MFT. ? Is Diskeeper free? Evidently it's a big secret if anyone has any scandisk/chkdsk errors on their XP HD's. -Clint ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ben Moore" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> It may be the page file and the MFT, Master File Table, that are not being defragmented. I use Diskeeper and the only way it can defrag the page file and the MFT is to do it on a reboot. Ben ============= PCWorks Mailing List ================= Don't see your post?
