As a former list owner, I can say that those footers ARE
necessary. They will cut down on the ridiculous microcephalic
posts like "re*move me", "get me off this list", "unsubcsrieb"
(yes, they cannot spell it), "where are the archives", and
messages of that type. They will also DRASTICALLY reduce the
number of ridiculous emails sent to the admins asking the SAME
questions that were covered in the 'welcome message' one
receives when joining a list. They are a necessity, however
the footers should be deleted from all replies to a thread so
they will only appear ONCE at the bottom of the thread.
(That's why Marlene won't allow replies that have previous
footers on them).

You'd think that a well thought out footer would indeed put an
end to those types of ridiculous posts, but incredibly, it does
not. So, I had to create specific filters (the list was I an
admin for was also on Freelists.org and they allow you to do
this) and the filters would block these type posts. In your
example below, yes, I would think ONE URL titled "List rules,
changes, and other FAQ's" that leads to said page would be a
better idea, such as Marlene does for this list.

Hello again,

I've been subscribing to PCWorks for some time now and am very
happy with it; and even feel part of this family where we know
who are the gurus, the wannabe gurus, and the newbies (I'm a
wannabe newbie). I recently tried another newsletter because
twice I never got a response from my "Task Scheduler &
Standby" question. Name of other newsletter will be
unmentioned unless someone is curious in private.

Maybe I'm wrong and entirely missing the point; maybe it's
only because I'm getting the digest; though I get the digest
here in PCWorks and this problem does not exist. Anyway,
besides the thank you's that are often posted in that
newsletter, I found the following situation (reminding me how
fortunate I am to be part of PCWorks):

In one posting by one person (must have been after a series of
threads), one response was followed by 5 sets of subscrpts
(that's five, see below), each one having 8 (that's eight)
URL's (or links), making a total of 40 links on one posting.
Think about it now ... that's 14 lines (19 including spaces)
multiplied by 8 sets making a total of (let me get out my
calculator), making 152 lines in one posting which added
nothing to the discussion. I'm most grateful we do not have
that situation here. I think the moderator mentioned to me
that it couldn't be helped and suggested I not get the digest;
Marlene here must know something that other moderators do not
know.

When you add the "thank you" postings, these subscripts take
up more space than the actual discussions. In the digest that
I receive, the following 14 lines (19 with spaces) is what
appeared 8 times in one person's posting (each 8 times for
each thread in the posting):

I can understand the thank you's, if they are kept super
brief; it lets the group know that the problem is solved and
the solution works. Of course, never the diplomat, I brought
this (both the thank you's and the subscripts) to their
attention, so it won't take long until I'm persona non grata.
My objection now stands in their archives like "who the hell
is this guy?" I hope y'all appreciate how neat PCWorks
operates; thank you Marlene Harold
