There should be an icon on the toolbar that is for the "reading pane." You can turn the preview on and off there or you can click on view and go to reading pane. In outlook you can set the reading pane status for each mail folder so you may have to do it more than one time to turn it off completely. There may well be a global setting somewhere but I haven't looked for it.
