..and what else is new? Sure it's helpful to those on a slow connection (I guess, even though most are small), but I was referring to the fact that whatever is on it is at the update site, *that's all*.
Plus, these CD's many times don't have the actual files on them, only LINKS back to the update site where you still have to d'load them (at least it's that way on the one I have from about 2 months back). Additionally, what's on the CD's are outdated. M$ many times will release a patch, then find out after the fact there is a problem with it, then have to release another patch for the patch. This "patched patch" would only be on the most recent CD release--then it will happen again in the future. Before installing anything from these CD's, it's best to search for the update # and find out if any subsequent patches to patch it have been released. -Clint God Bless Clint Hamilton, Owner http://OrpheusComputing.com ) From: Hugh Vandervoort Date: Wed, 04 Aug 2004 01:11:09 -0700 I beg to differ. It's a Godsend to those with Win9x who may have trouble getting any updates at all soon, and it's a real boon to those on dial-up who don't get updates regularly or at all due to the size of the downloads. My XP Home CD came without SP1 or some of the more significant security updates, and this CD is essential to any reinstall of this OS before connecting to the internet. Blanket pronoucements such as this often overlook conditions that are not obvious to the pronouncer. **************************************************************************** It's a waste. -Clint ----- Original Message ----- From: "Roger" > A short time ago Microsoft offered a free CD with all of the Windows 98 > Updates on it. >Does anyone know if MS has a CD available with all of > the XP Service packs, etc. thereon? > > Roger *gasp* They did? Wonder if I can still get it - I'm off to look at their site... Anyone know the direct link to get it? No, but I'd like to get it if they offer it...
