Then why does it give me the option to restart later?
The fact that the 250gb is scanning that much faster that the smaller one is
ANOTHER warning sign.
Of what? It's always been incredibly fast. For the first few months
after I had it it took all of about 5 seconds to go through the complete
defrag on the 250, but I didn't have a lot saved on it at that time. Maybe a few
gig. Now that it's half full it takes a few minutes, at most, to defrag.

No, sorry, they haven't shown up after the reformat because I've not
been able to run anti-spy since then. They showed up after the week long
anti-spy run, right before I decided to reformat.
Almost everything is back to normal so far. I still have three or
four apps to install, but I'm not able to get sound on either the the desktop
itself or the DVD player app. None of my system sounds are on board for some
reason. I can play cd's in Winamp and one or two other devices, but I can't play
sound on the DVD player. The pictures come out fine, but I have no sound.

Addendum: I finally got the sound working an hour ago.
I still can't get to safe mode or run Scandisk, but I got AVG's
anti-spy last night and ran that twice, it says I have none. I ran defrag just
after that and, even though I only have just under 3 gig used on the C drive, it
still took an hour to run, mostly because it would go through about 2 lines,
then restart, 2 more lines and restart again, etc., the whole way through.
Also, I got my first error message last night, one day after I got
everything working again! It was the Windows blue screen of death and the error
read: ERROR: OE: 0028: C0030D04. I kept hitting the space bar and nothing
happened; I kept hitting Ctrl; Alt; Del and nothing happened, so I shut it down
by pushing the power button. I'm going to get a new hard drive later this
week. I don't need anymore excrement from this one.
