I have encountered a problem and suspect that the cause is a video card that it going. Here is the story.

I had tried to improve the sound by installing updates to the sound card. When I did this, the machine crashed badly. In trying to reboot, it would give an error and then reboot. The error was so fast that it could not be read. I finally took a picture where I captured the screen and was able to make out that it was possibly the last program or hardware installed. I took out the sound card but the error still occured. As I have a dual boot (win 98 and xp pro), I brought the machine up in 98 and salvaged the windows folder to an external drive. While I was working in 98, the problem started. It is this. With windows fully booted, and showing icons and folders on the desktop, they wll disappear leaving only the wallpaper. This occurs in about 5-10 seconds after display. When I move the mouse, the full display comes back, and then disappears again upon the short standing. To continue:

I had to reinstall win xp over the old and now am experiencing the same effect with win xp. If I open a window or email, it will stay, but I can see around the edges that all the icons and taskbar have disappeared. The taskbar is set to stay on top. I cannot find any other setting that would cause the disappearance of the desktop until the mouse is moved. As such, I am now suspecting that the video card may have taken a shot in the crash.

Any ideas?
