Like many things, it depends: I would start with an online virus scan like http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp (There's others-do a Google search. Download and install AVG (Free Edition) from www.grisoft.com. It includes a boot up scanner. Tell me all the gurus ! How to get rid of a virus if the computer has already been already infected ? If a computer has a virus and there are no anti virus installed what do I do ? And since software like norton are requires updates, will updating the software remove the virus ? What about boot sector viruses ?
