Clint ... We have it all together now and here you picked up an old thread; something I posted some time back. With your help, with Lynne's help, we already know that little can be done to keep the threads "in line" because of reasons you outlined below. The problem is solved (note that I used eCleaner below ... looks neat). As mentioned in an earlier posting, IrfanView is now in the Open With window. This matter is now being put to rest; services will be held in the Flatbush Avenue chapel. ... Harold
From: "Support-OrpheusComputing.com" (Clint) You've been asking WHAT causes it and WHAT you can do about it, and I've been telling you: NOTHING, there's nothing YOU can do **ALONE** since it is also dependent upon the SENDER of the emails. And yes, "Stripmail" can put an email or thread back to a more original or pristine format. > One last time..... 1. The way emails appear to you and I, WILL be DIFFERENT, EVEN if using the same email program, unless we have the EXACT SAME "Read" or view options set, EXACT SAME layout set, and the EXACT SAME monitor resolution. 2. The way emails appear to one is NOT just dependent upon the RECIPIENT, but the SENDER's "SEND" options, as well as typing habits and email program used. 3. The way to PERMANENTLY "clean up" an email to send can only be done by a program like "Stripmail", or, do it manually. Of course (like I touched on in #1) you can also temporarily "clean it up" in your inbox by changing the email program's layout or "Read" settings (like moving the vertical separator bar in OE for one example), but these things will not affect the email permanently as in if when you reply to it or fwd it. Ok, I give up now. ;-) (I'm sure there's many things you know about of which I am unaware, then our roles could be reversed). - -Clint ... RESPONSE: I might know a fraction of what you and others in the group know. From: "Support-OrpheusComputing.com" (Clint) I don't know if you were aware but the IrfanView shortcut (and just about any other .exe shortcut) on the Desktop can have (image files in this case) dragged to it and it will open. > I wasn't aware of that either (thank you). I might have known it but it's not a habit I ever got into. And I'm a creature of habits in using the computer. Note: This has been a great learning experience. From Clint I learned about using the SendTo applet as a substitute for Open With in this context. At the same time I figured out how to add a file to the Open With window which requires my first adding the IrfanView extension to the "Registered file types" list in "Folder Options" (never had to add a file to that list before). That put the icon into the Open With window. And h*cking the Registry, I was able to make Open With a staple in any right-click drop-down menu so all worked out well.. > > Back to an earlier point (an aside which belongs in Subject: "Formatting replies to the group"). Notice how the thread below (which was fine in the original posting, like the paragraph I'm typing right now), is now all right when this window is maximized ... but skewed when restored to a smaller window. That was my point, how to avoid that scattered look. I would like someone to say it can't be done and not keep me wondering ... Harold > Harold my friend, I think we've beaten the email formatting issue to death and I don't know how else I can possibly explain it. Maybe you should read over all of my posts on the subject in the archives. http://www.mail-archive.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/ - -Clint > > Here's where we come to an impasse in communication, which often happens in exchanging technical information. I wanted to know how to straighten out the threads and as I see it, you are telling me how to type a message (using the Enter key etc). I see nothing in the archives saying it can be done or it can't be done ... it's the threads I'm concerned about, not the current message. At this impasse, I'll settle for knowing that straightening out the threads can only be done manually (eCleaner, StripMail, dragging the thread lines around, whatever) until everyone, sender, receiver, and ISP (I learned this from Lynne; Lynne, correct me if I'm wrong) uses the exact same configurations for sending/receiving email. ... Thanks Clint, my friend; impasses do happen. In a million years I'll never know what you, and many others in this group, might have forgotten in computer tech ... Harold > From: "Support-OrpheusComputing.com" (Clint) I don't recall how to populate the list on '98 (it's done automatically on XP), but you can drag a shortcut from anything you want to the "Send To" folder and use that instead of the "Open with......." function. I always do that with IrfanView, Metapad, and several other apps. - -Clint ============= PCWorks Mailing List ================= Don't see your post?
